Cetos Water, a spinoff from the Yip Lab, has been named the winner of Wheaton Precious Metals' 2026 Future of Mining Challenge and awarded US$1 million to advance its technology for transforming mining wastewater into clean, reusable water. The annual competition recognizes innovative solutions that support sustainable water management in mining operations.
Cetos' TSSE (temperature swing solvent extraction) technology, pioneered in the Yip Lab, is a low-energy, solvent-based approach to convert complex mine wastewater from a liability into a resource, enabling discharge compliance, reducing tailings-related risks, and supporting water reuse in both water-abundant and water-scarce regions. The award highlights growing industry momentum toward sustainable water strategies and responsible resource development.
We congratulate the Cetos team on this significant recognition and look forward to continued progress in advancing practical, scalable solutions for water treatment and resource recovery in the mining sector.
