Our collaborative study on critical materials in landfill leachate is published in EST!

August 18, 2026

Our study investigating the presence and resource recovery potential of critical materials in municipal solid waste landfill leachate has been published in Environmental Science & Technology.

In this collaborative study led by Professor Amisha Shah's group at Purdue University, we analyzed 37 leachate samples from six U.S. landfills and identified 24 critical materials. The findings reveal how critical material concentrations vary with landfill age and wastewater treatment processes, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for recovering valuable resources from landfill leachate. This work provides a foundation for transforming landfill wastewater from a waste management challenge into a potential source of critical materials.
