Xi and Yip's research article on Cascading Osmotically Mediated Reverse Osmosis (COMRO) has just been accepted for publication in Environmental Science & Technology.
The study analyzed the desalination of hypersaline brines with COMRO and found that the novel technology can achieve substantial energy savings compared to conventional reverse osmosis, with only moderate hydraulic pressure requirements. The innovation can potentially extend membrane-based methods to more sustainably treat ultrahigh salinity streams of environmental concern, such as produced water from oil and gas operations and flue gas desulfurization wastewater from power plants.
