Yip met with the OCAPI research team of Laboratoire Eau Environnement et Systèmes Urbains (Leesu; Water - Environment - Urban Systems Laboratory) at École des ponts ParisTech to discuss nutrient recovery from diverted urine in urban population centers (Paris, New York, et al.!).
Center: Dr. Fabien Esculier, Principal Investigator of OCAPI and left: Dr. Tanguy Fardet, postdoctoral researcher at OCAPI.
Yip also visited the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul neighborhood in the 14th Arrondissement. The neighborhood, currently under development, will have urine separation toilets in 600 homes! The urine will be collected and processed in an onsite facility to produce liquid fertilizer.
Translates to "How the toilets of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul will participate in sustainable agriculture".
A bag of cookies prepared with flour from wheat grown using the urine fertilizer (perfectly safe to consume!).
Special thanks to Dr. Fabien Esculier for facilitating the visit, Dr. Aurélie Joveniaux for hosting the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul site visit, Dr. Tanguy Fardet for the tour of ENPC's urine diversion toilet facilities, and the members of OCAPI for the engaging discussions!
More on nutrient recovery from urine can be found here (22 minutes, suitable for general public) and here (30 minutes technical presentation).
