Our collaborative study with the University of Sheffield and Shell titled “The development and validation of a novel, parameter-free, modelling strategy for electromembrane processes: Electrodialysis” has been published in Desalination.
Electrodialysis using ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) are used in a wide range of separations, including desalination. Being able to model these processes will allow for process design and optimization, as well as inform technological improvements. However, most existing models use fitting parameters, which constrains their utility and generalizability. In this work, we present a novel, circuit-based modeling strategy that does not need any fitting parameters. The model was experimentally validated and showed excellent agreement with experimental data across a range of operating conditions, underscoring its potential to be an useful tool.
